Chanthaburi - City and around | Gems market is located on Srichan Avenue. In the mornings of Friday, Saturday, and Sunday many people come here for trading gems, jewellery, and other precious stones. It is interesting to observe the activities: discussion, negotiation, estimating, selling and buying of merchandises.
The Cathedral of Immaculate Conception
It is close to Satri Manda Phitak school on the eastern side of Chanthaburi river. The church was built by migrant Christian Vietnamese people in 1711. However it was renovated and rebuilt five times between 1711 and 1985. The Gothic style architecture was decorated by stained glasses and murals of Saints on the wall painting. In front of the Church is a reinforced concrete bridge crossing over the Chantaburi river. This 50 meter long bridge leads to the ancient market called "Yan Tha Luang" . The traditionally lively Yan Tha Luang market is surrounded by communities of century-old wooden houses. Wat Plub Wat Plub Bang Kacha or Wat Plub is an old temple of late Ayuddhaya period. It is located in Tambon Bang Kacha, to the southwest of the town. Inside the compound there are wooden relic chapel, the hall for keeping the scripture, and crematoria.
The old chapel was built in Thai architecture,
including replicas of Buddha image in many postures.
An interesting place is the old rectangular stupa
that was used as a place for creating potent water.
The sacred water was distributed by the King to the soldiers in order to make them fully alert.
Another attraction is a wooden architecture called "Sam Sang".
It was used as a place for cremating dead monarch.
It is the oldest of this kind in Thailand, but now only the basement remains.
Wat Plub was built in 1757, and was named after a tree in its compound. It was used as a living quarters for King Taksin and his soldiers before the recapture of the town from the invaders. Around 50 meters from Wat Plub is a native old market called Bang Kacha market. The market place is made up of old wooden living quarters running parallel to the bank of the Chanthaburi river. In the past it was a central market selling the goods to marine traders. Bang Kacha village is an unique place with traditional ways of living. The main businesses of the villagers are gem cutting and homemade noodles. Biking trip around the village is recommendable.
Wat Thong Tou
Located 4 km from town on Sukhumvit highway. An ancient Bot which was built over a Khmer-style temple. It contains a collection of many ancient Khmer sculptures such as lintels, sandstone door columns carved in various designs, and stone inscriptions. Nearby is the Muang Phaniat archaeological site that contains remains of laterite base of a large Khmer religious sanctuary. The ancient town is believed to date back to 12th to 16th centuries B.E. (Buddhist Era. Note: BE 2547 = AD 2003)) Noen Wong Camp This ancient site is located in Bang Kacha on the highway 3147, Chanthaburi - Tha Chalaeb road. It was established as the town in 1834 during the reign of King Rama III. Khai Noen Wong or Noen Wong Camp is square shape with extensive laterite walls mounted with large cannons. Each side has its own ramp across the defensive moat. It was regarded as a powerful military camp of the time.
Later it was established as a national marine museum,
including an Underwater Archaeological Office.
It exhibits Thailand's merchant marine history and items discovered from underwater.
The main exhibition room on the second floor displays an attractive reproduced argosy.
The mock-up of how the staff work underwater is featured on the ground floor.
